A safari need not involve a flight to Africa. Several times during the summer, the Santa Barbara Zoo offers parents and children behind-the-scenes tours called Twilight Safaris, which take place from 5:30 PM to 10 PM. The experience includes animal encounters, films, games, and a train ride, as well as a pizza dinner. Scout groups can even use the opportunity to complete requirements for merit badges or patches by coordination with the zoo’s education team.
More adventurous children may embark on an Overnight Safari, which includes the same events as the Twilight Safari but allows families to camp overnight at the zoo. In the morning, families enjoy a pancake breakfast before returning home.
Furthermore, many Santa Barbara parents take advantage of the Date Night Safari, which allows them to drop their children at the zoo for a fun evening of animal-themed activities while they enjoy a night on the town. Occasionally, the Date Night Safari provides an overnight option.
